This interesting and non-intentional pairing of books provided another level of discussion in book group. Both are memoirs; both feature intelligent, independent girls; both girls have strong, loving, determined mothers. The first is more contemporary in its content coinciding with the rash of white police officer shootings of young black men. The second is more artistic in its presentation of the early years of the author's life. Woodson's memoir is written as short poems, the words beautifully chosen. The white space allows the reader to stop and reflect. Both are worth reading, Ward's more brutal in the telling.
